Don't call me Scarface

I like the way the municipality has left the scar on this rotunda unhealed; situated on the corner of Bootham and Marygate it marks the boundary of St Mary's Abbey. The old red telephone box sets this view off a treat; a pity that with the advent of mobile phones they are an endangered species in need of almost as much protection as the old stone.

This is Emily Jayne, one of York's tour buses, waiting on St Leonard's Place outside the Art Gallery and the King's Manor, opposite Bootham Bar.

Exhibition Square fountains, York

This is a busy rather than a pretty scene, though York's architectural features are always attractive. If the pink shop grabs your interest, follow the Mary Shortle label. This is not our first post on Exhibition Square, just off Bootham Bar, the north-western gate to the city, but it is the first to include the fountain. For views of the gate-tower and cathedral from this point, follow the labels below.

High Petergate and Bootham Bar

A view from High Petergate, within the walls, looking towards Bootham Bar, the western gate which we saw from the Art Gallery a few days ago. The Minster is about a hundred yards or so behind us. Yesterday's Wonkey Donkey or Three-Legged Mare is on this street of boutiques, restaurants and pubs.

One of the five family-run Mary Shortle toy shops is here, just by Bootham Bar. The selection of dolls is fabulous and a visit is a must for grandparents.

Taken from the front of the Art Gallery on Exhibition Square, we have, from left to right:

 William Etty, York's most famous artist (1787 - 1849),

Bootham Bar,  the north-west gate to the city,

York Minster, Europe's largest gothic cathedral,

an open-top tour bus.

Bootham Bar (14th century and later) stands almost on the site of the Roman gate of Eboracum.
