Gray's Court garden

Between the city walls and the Minster, these gardens belong to Gray's Court café and restaurant, worth a visit for the house alone. Follow the labels for earlier posts.

Ladies in red

but only one plying her trade on the Ouse by Lendal Bridge. The building on the right of the bridge is the café from which this earlier picture was taken.

Time for tea 2, Bullivant's

Not a terribly well-framed shot, but a reminder of how much York depends on tourism. There are just so many cafés and restaurants of various kinds. This is one on Blake Street is of the more traditional sort, as evidenced by the lace. Below is breakfast in Bordeaux for Jenny Freckles of Saltaire Daily Photo who has just treated us to a virtual coffee.

La Place Verte

The Belgian coffee house and shop on Skeldergate Bridge, located in the old motor and toll house, here overlook it older neighbour, Clifford's Tower. At the time of writing, this café is for sale! The website gallery is worth a visit both for the produce and the surroundings.

Bikes and bites

Bikes, cafés, boutiques and tourists: that's York, and this is The Vanilla Café on College Street, only seconds away from the east end of the Minster. By coincidence, this review appears in today's edition of the York Press.

Petrified lions 2

Don't worry, the lions are harmless. 

We've been here at Grays Court, off Chapter House Street,  several times already, so you know where we spend our pocket money. Through the gates and to the left are the tea-gardens whilst directly to the left, avoiding the risk of being eaten alive by heraldic beasts, is the main entrance to the tea-rooms, where the round, possibly walnut, table of a few days ago is to be found.

Here we are looking north-east towards the city walls from which you can get down directly into the gardens. I recommend the scrambled egg and salmon for Saturday brunch. 

Time for tea

Little Bettys on Stonegate, offers a quainter version of the unmissable Bettys experience to be had just two minutes away on St Helen's Square. Follow the first link for the slideshow. 

Strange company

Gray's Court gardens,  obviously the place to get a head.

Just barged in …

There is no longer any commercial traffic on the Ouse, unless you count this floating café, but leisure craft bring a splash of colour to the river. Narrowboats, as these slender barges are called, are often tied up at this point, at the bottom of Museum Gardens, making an attractive summer scene.

Leaning on Lendal

The circular tower here by Lendal Bridge on the River Ouse is a café we haven't yet tried. The lean to the right is accidental!
