I'm always happy if I get this spot; I occasionally finish off a week's language training here, most recently with a client from Annecy, France. This is the River Ouse and Lendal Bridge reflected in the full-length double-glazed windows of the City Screen café. I must try to stitch a double-length shot of the real and the reflected scene one day.

Woodsmill Quay, York 2
This is the quieter, non-tourist side of the River Ouse, where former warehouses are now luxury flats. These buildings are between Lendal and Skeldergate bridges, opposite the famous and frequently flooded King's Arms pub. I like the fact that the gantry has been retained.

Esplanade moorings
This kind of scene sometimes has me looking up the price of boats. We are now on the Esplanade, just beyond the arch shown a few days ago, looking downstream towards Lendal bridge and York town centre.

I scream, "Ice cream!" 2
The ice-cream van and the York boat tell us that the tourist season is well under way. This is the bottom of Marygate, between Scarborough Bridge (rail) and Lendal Bridge.

Ladies in red
but only one plying her trade on the Ouse by Lendal Bridge. The building on the right of the bridge is the café from which this earlier picture was taken.

Ladies in red in diamonds
York tourist boats from inside one of the Lendal Bridge cafés. Thanks to those who commiserated with us about the closure of Blake Head bookshop and café; sadly it is indeed the vegetarian one on Micklegate, Jackie from Glasgow.

Lady in Red 5, 6 and 7
Looking north-west upstream towards Lendal Bridge from the City Screen boardwalk. You can make closer acquaintance with these particular ladies in red here.

Ooze, not owz …
This is the Ouse (pronounced ooze, so no cricket puns please), the larger of York's two rivers. Ahead is the graceful span of Lendal Bridge, beyond which can be seen the back of The Mansion House, the tower of St Martins Le Grand and the City Screen terrace.

Leaning on Lendal
The circular tower here by Lendal Bridge on the River Ouse is a café we haven't yet tried. The lean to the right is accidental!

All dressed up and nowhere to go
Pleasure boats on the Ouse seen from Lendal Bridge, showing the Guildhall and the modern City Screen with its inviting terrace. For a panoramic view go here to the wonderful York 360º site.

Leaving Lendal
It's time we moved on from Lendal Bridge as it's getting a bit cold standing around in the same spot. Before we go elsewhere, perhaps to the Foss, York's smaller river, let's take another look at the round tower we saw a few days ago. It looks more interesting from the back, don't you think? I'll find out what it used for, but for the moment, enjoy the snow; it doesn't usually stay around this long.

More snowy reflections
Medieval tower for sale! I wonder if a buy to let mortgage might be the thing! We are still on Lendal Bridge, looking back towards the town centre. Must pay more attention to my verticals.

Snowy reflections on the Ouse
Still on Lendal Bridge on the Ouse, looking south-west away from the town centre. I presume this round tower was part of the defenses; the square tower on the opposite bank is up for sale! Look in tomorrow if you're in the market for a piece of medieval real estate.

The Ouse from Lendal Bridge
To wish you all the best for 2010, here is a full-on picture of the bigger of York's two rivers, the Ouse (pronounced "ooze"). This is from Lendal Bridge, on the way to the railway station. In the distance, more or less to the west, is the rail bridge bearing the main London to Edinburgh line.
