Red, not rampant

With foundations going back to 13th century, the Red Lion on Merchant Gate claims to be York's oldest inn. A walk of less than five minutes from the city centre, providing you can resist the shop windows on the way, will bring you to this timber-framed hostelry which was the highwayman Dick Turpin's local before he was caught and hanged.

  2. I'm so ignorant that my only knowledge of Dick Turpin is that he was the subject of a Royal Doulton mug.

Thanks for your comment on "L." I had some trepidation about this posting precisely because of the negative connotation to the word. And there's a lot of local political controversy about the high number of liquor stores in low income areas. Finally I decided to let the chips fall where they may. So far so good.

  3. A pub, a café and an inn in one week. Sounds like someone's on a vacation. Or would like to be on one. :P

Love the hanging flowers on all three.

And about "peat" — it's a sports term for "years/seasons in a row." I take it you're not much of a sports fan either? I only learned the term last year myself.
