Fossgate façades

A long view up Fossgate towards Colliergate and the central tower of York Minster.  The furniture shop on the right used to be a cinema, as you might have guessed from the façade.

New kid on the Foss

This detail of the bridge shown yesterday contrasts nicely with slightly older York Minster.

Let the byre beware

The window-dressing in the centre of York is often eye-catching. This is Stonegate, between the Minster and St Helen's Square.

Murky Minster

A rather dull view of the Minster taken through the tinted glass of one of the York Wheel pods.

Reach for the sky!

York Minster's chapter house, a must-see construction, even more fascinating from inside.

Seen from St John

The view from just outside the Uni of York St John, for which see Monday's post. Sorry that I'm not able to keep up with either posting or reading at the moment.

York Minster triptych

The central tower, courtyard lamp and chapter house of this magnificent building photographed from just by the Treasurer's House garden wall, for which see tomorrow's post.

Cubes, curves and cathedral

Minster and monster? This shows part of the modern extension to the University of York St John with the cathedral twin towers in the centre. I really enjoy the new architecture every time I pass. There are so many pleasing features, not least the type of brick. The cuboids above and contours below form a bold but satisfying contrast, as does the wave of brick flowing away from a line of 19th century terraced houses. The link takes you to the Lord Mayor's Walk side of the development.

At the crossroads …

looking up Low Petergate from King's Square to the wonderful west towers of York Minster. To the left is Church Street, and to the right Goodramgate.

York Minster from Low Petergate

Taken a little further back than some of my other shots and therefore including Drake's Fish and Chips sign as well as the wonderful west towers against an almost clear blue sky.

York Minster and The Red House

Looking down Duncombe Place past The Red House to the west face of York Minster. Now a quality antique centre,  The Red House was built in 1700 for the Lord Mayor; it also features on this blog here. The stone building just after the Red House is St Wilfrid's Roman Catholic church.

Tall towers, tall chimneys

The central and twin west towers of York Minster are seen here from the north-west section of the city walls which runs parallel to Gillygate.

Market, Minster and Marks 2

From the same viewing point as yesterday's post, with the camera swung left to take in St Sampson's church tower. The market is just below us. The twin towers are west-facing and the rose window south. St Sampson's is one of the many church buildings no longer used as a place of worship; it houses an over-60s drop-in centre.

Market, Minster and Marks

York Minster and Newgate Market from the third floor of Marks and Spencer. This is one of the views to be had from the new window, but if you want a shot, it has to be taken through the glass. The staff canteen, with the same view, is another floor higher, but there is no access for shoppers or snappers.

Ghostly grey, rich red

The twin towers of York Minster contrast with the much more recent red brick of what was originally York Dispensary, built 111 years ago. The building is now home to a firm of solicitors.

Christmas Shambles

York's most famous street decorated for the season with the central tower of the Minster in the background.

Snow slide

There is usually some kind of children's ride in Parliament Street during the holiday period. The distant tower is York Minster, and this is snow from the beginning of the month.

Little and large

The affectionately named St Mike's beside his (or her)  big sister, York Minster. This is a wintry version of this photo.

York Minster gets a head …

during last week's impressive son et lumière otherwise known as the Illuminating York festival which attracted large crowds both here at the great south door and in Dean's Park on the other side of the cathedral.

Lady not quite in red …

Getting a decent night shot of York Minster lit up was not easy, so this is the best of the bunch, showing the White Rose of York below the rose window. It is part of a short, but impressive son et lumière forming part of the Illuminating York festival which finished Saturday gone.
